If you want to get from Taiping to Bukit Mertajam (BM), by far the easiest way to travel is to take a KTM train.
You can choose what type of train to take with both KTM Komuter Utara (northern commuter) trains and the faster Electric Train Services (ETS) operating on this route.

The KTM Komuter train services are by far the cheapest way to travel from Taiping to Bukit Mertajam, they also have the most frequent departures.

The duration of the journey by commuter train from Taiping to BM is 53 minutes.
There is no need to make an advance booking for any KTM Komuter train service in Malaysia and tickets are sold on the day of travel only.
Komuter trains are like subway / tube trains in the west.
Seating is arranged along the sides of the carriages and is on a first-come-first-served basis.
The large central aisle is for standing passengers.
This line is not as busy as the other Komuuter Utara Line between Butterworth and Padang Besar so you should be able to get a seat at most times of day if you avoid the rush hours.
ETS Train from Taiping to Bukit Mertajam
If you want to travel by train in a reserved seat, you will have to pay around 3 times as much as the Komuter trains and take an ETS train.

ETS trains are less frequent than the Komuter trains and operate on the route between KL Sentral and Butterworth.
You should always book your tickets in advance if you want to travel on one of these ETS services as there are no standing passengers allowed and each passenger must have a reserved seat number.

Bus to Bukit Mertajam from Taiping
You really should not consider travelling by bus from Taiping to BM as the bus stations that serve Taiping are located 6 or 7 km outside of town (at Kamunting or Simpang) and there is no direct bus to BM (you will have to take a bus to Penang Sentral in Butterworth).
