If you are looking to travel from Penang to Redang Island, you will first have to travel to Shahbandar Jetty in Kuala Terengganu (KT) or if you are booked at one of the island's resorts, you may have to go to Merang Jetty where a lot of resorts operate their own ferry services to take you to your accommodation.
The distance from Penang to Redang island is approximately 480 km overland.
Like many islands in the northeast of Peninsular Malaysia, this is not a year-round destination.
Redang Island (Pulau Redang) resorts are closed during the monsoon season from November to the end of February.
So, the Redang Island open season is from early March until the end of October.

Ferry Ticket Prices from KT to Redang:
Adult fare: 110 RM return / 55 one-way.
Child fare: 60 RM return / 30 one-way.
These air-conditioned boats can accommodate up to 267 passengers and the boat takes around one hour 30 - 40 minutes to get to Redang Island.
Merang Jetty is located 38 km north of Kuala Terengganu and is the shortest distance between the mainland and Redang Island (40 minutes from KT by taxi or private transfer which you can arrange with your resort).
Ferries that operate from here are run by the bigger resorts, taking you from the jetty straight to your accommodation.
The duration of the ferry trip from Merang to Redang is as little as 40 minutes.
If you book your accommodation, you will be advised if you need to travel to Merang Jetty and the departure time for the ferry (usually only once a day for each resort).
If you want to travel overland, taking a bus/coach is the only direct way to travel by public transport to KT.

The duration of the bus trip from Penang to KT is around 8 and a half hours.
If you do not want to overnight in KT, your best option is to take a night bus from Penang to Kuala Terengganu, then you can catch one of the morning ferries out to Redang island.
The Shahbandar Jetty is a 15 minute walk away from Kuala Terengganu Bus Terminal.

There are no train services to Kuala Terengganu.
There are no direct flights from PEN to RDN.
The only airline that flies to Redang is Berjaya Air, who operates flights from Kuala Lumpur's Subang Airport to Redang (*** now operates only charter flights).
There are also currently no direct flights from Penang to Kuala Terengganu.
If you want to fly from Penang, your best option is to take a flight to Kota Bharu, then travel down the coast by bus (165 km to KT).

If you have your own car or a rental, you can take route 4 from the west coast of Malaysia to the east coast, straight to KT.
This long drive covers around 450 km by road.
Parking at the KT Jetty is available for +12 RM a day.
