If you have just crossed the Thailand - Malaysia border crossing at Padang Besar and want to travel to Langkawi Island by ferry, you will have to travel from Padang Besar to Kuala Perlis Jetty.
To get to the Jetty at Kuala Perlis by public transport, you can choose to take a bus from Padang Besar via Kangar, take a train via Arau or take the much more expensive option of a taxi.

There is no direct bus service to Kuala Perlis from Padang Besar.
You will have to take a MyBas bus service to Kangar, then change buses.
The bus is the cheapest way to get from Padang Besar to Kuala Perlis (Padang Besar ke Kuala Perlis).
To catch the bus to Kuala Perlis, you will first have to leave the border / immigration area and walk into town.
If you have arrived at the Malaysian Padang Besar KTM Railway Station:
You will have to leave the train station by the pedestrian bridge located upstairs.
Once you have crossed the railway tracks, the bridge takes you to the main road border crossing.
After leaving the bridge, you need to turn right to exit the border area.
If you have crossed the main road border:
After getting your passport stamped into Malaysia, walk straight ahead until you come to a large roundabout.
Walk around this roundabout (clockwise) and take the second exit (straight ahead).
Walk down the hill (on the left-hand side of the road).
After a couple of hundred metres and you will see a row of shops (including a bank with money exchange facilities if you need to buy some Malaysian Ringgit).
Just before the row of shops, you will see a small shelter - this is the bus stop.

MyBas bus services pick up passengers from here on their route from Padang Besar to Kangar Bus Terminal (Terminal Bukit Lagi).

The bus to Kangar from Pdg. Besar takes around an hour.
Once you arrive at Kangar, you will have to take another bus from here to Kuala Perlis Bus Terminal.

The bus to K. Perlis takes around 20 to 30 minutes.
The bus price from Padang Besar to Kuala Perlis is a total of between 7 and 8 Ringgit (for the two trips).
From Kuala Perlis Bus Terminal it is an easy few minutes walk to the ferry terminal (jetty / jeti).
Just walk to the end of the bus station (away from the ticket offices).
There is a path here that takes you out to the main road where the ferry terminal is located.
The journey to the Langkawi ferry jetty from Padang Besar can also be done by train.
The first step of the journey is to take a KTM Komuter (commuter) train from Padang Besar to Arau (19 minutes).

Once you arrive at KTM Arau Train Station you can then take a taxi or bus from here to the jetty at Kuala Perlis.

The quickest but most expensive way to travel from Padang Besar to Kuala Perlis is to take a taxi (or get a Grab car to pick you up if you have their App on your mobile).
You can get a taxi from the main exit of the train station and from the taxi station in Padang Besar town on the Malaysian side of the border.
We would recommend you walk to the taxi station as here they have all the taxi fares written up on a whiteboard.
The taxi station is located just off the large roundabout as you exit the road border crossing.
As you walk around the roundabout (clockwise), cross the first road and you will see a set of stairs.
Take the stairs and you will be at the taxi station.
The taxi fare from Padang Besar to Kuala Perlis Jetty should be between 45 and 50 RM.
