This is easily the quickest way to get from Padang Besar to KL overland but for those travelling on a tight budget, you may want to think about travelling on a cheaper but slower bus (see the bus section below).
If you want to save a little money and stop off along the way you could take one of the cheaper KTM Komuter trains to places like Alor Setar, Sungai Petani, Butterworth (for Penang Island) or Taiping.
You can then take a shorter ETS train journey from any of these places (just make sure you can get an ETS ticket first).
Although there are no direct bus services from Padang Besar to Kuala Lumpur, travel by bus in Malaysia is cheaper than taking an ETS train so here are a few routes you could take to get to KL from Padang Besar cheaply.
1) You could take a local MyBas bus service from Padang Besar to Kangar.
Kangar Bus Terminal (Terminal Bukit Lagi) has fairly frequent buses to Kuala Lumpur's TBS Bus Terminal.
2) A better idea would be to take a cheap KTM Komuter train to Butterworth (Penang Sentral).
When you arrive at Butterworth Train Station it is just a couple of minutes walk away from the new Penang Sentral Bus Terminal where there are dozens of buses leaving for Kuala Lumpur every day.

The quickest way to get from Padang Besar to KL is to fly.
There is no airport at Padang Besar but you have a couple of nearby airports you can travel from.
1) Flights from Hat Yai Airport to KLIA (HDY to KUL).
Thai AirAsia operates flights from Hat Yai to Kuala Lumpur taking a little over one hour to get to KLIA.
To get from Hat Yai Airport from Padang Besar you will need to take a taxi.
A better option would be to not go to Padang Besar in the first place and take transport by train or bus to Hat Yai city which is much closer to the airport by taxi or a regular Airport Shuttle bus service.

2) Take a flight from Alor Setar Airport (AOR) to KUL or SZB airports in Kuala Lumpur.
These internal Malaysian flights are usually a bit cheaper than flying from Hat Yai.
AirAsia has flights from AOR to KUL (KLIA).
Malaysia Airlines and Malindo Air fly from AOR to SZB (Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport / Subang Airport).
