Ipoh to Penang Train KTM Komuter, ETS Schedule - Price
Travelling by train from Ipoh to Penang you can now choose from a couple of options:
- A cheap KTM Komuter Utara (northern commuter) train.
- A more comfortable, slightly faster, but more expensive ETS train.
KTM Komuter Train from Ipoh to Penang
The northern commuter (KTM Komuter Utara) route was extended to Ipoh in September 2023.
This is now the most popular way to travel from Ipoh to Penang as it is really cheap compared to the ETS services and is even cheaper than taking a bus.

KTM Komuter trains depart from the KTM Ipoh Railway Station located just on the edge of Ipoh Old Town.
The train journey from Ipoh to
Penang
by KTM Komuter train takes a little under two hours to get to Butterworth Railway Station (Penang Sentral) located on the mainland.
From the train station, you can walk 5 minutes to the ferry jetty and take a short ferry ride over to Georgetown on Penang Island.
Tickets for these trains from Ipoh to Butterworth Penang cost just 12.80 RM.
KTM Komuter tickets are only available to purchase on the same day as travel.
Tickets can be purchased from the ticket office at Ipoh station.

Ticket prices for the ETS train to Penang from Ipoh vary and will cost you anything from around 33 RM for a Gold service, to around 42 RM for a Platinum service.
