If you want to travel from Ipoh to Langkawi overland, a good route to take is to go from Ipoh to Kuala Perlis Jetty, then take the ferry from here over to Kuah Jetty on Langkawi Island.
The distance from Ipoh to the Jetty at Kuala Perlis by road is around 295 km.
Taking the direct bus is a fairly easy way to travel to the jetty in Kuala Perlis from Ipoh.
Buses depart from Ipoh's Aman Jaya Bus Terminal located 10 km from Ipoh Old Town.
To get to the bus terminal you will have to take a taxi or a cheap local bus that departs from the Medan Kidd Bus Terminal located just on the edge of the Old Town (5 - 10 minutes walk south of the railway station).
Bus tickets from Ipoh Aman Jaya to Kuala Perlis Bus Terminal cost around 30 to 35 RM.
The duration of the bus journey to Kuala Perlis is approximately 3 and a half hours (but you should add at least another hour travel time just to get to Aman Jaya from Ipoh by local bus).
Once you arrive at Kuala Perlis Bus Terminal it is just a short walk away from the ferry terminal / jetty. Just walk to the end of the bus station (away from the ticket offices) and there is a pathway that leads you out to the ferry terminal road.

A more expensive but quicker way to travel the Kuala Perlis from Ipoh is to take an ETS train from Ipoh Railway Station to Arau Railway Station in Perlis.
Once you arrive at Arau Station, you can take a taxi or local bus to the jetty at Kuala Perlis >

Train tickets from Ipoh to Arau cost between 46 and 61 RM depending on what type of ETS services you take (Gold or Platinum).

The drive to Kuala Perlis should take around 3 and a half hours from Ipoh (using the highway).
Once you arrive at Kuala Perlis, you can choose to take your car over to Langkawi on one of the roll-on-roll-off ferries or park at one of the many parking areas around the jetty (parking fees are around 10 RM per-day).
