Travel from Ipoh to Thailand on the daliy overnight Ipoh Hat Yai Train operated by KTM Malaysian Railways.

If you book a nice sleeping berth, this is an excellent way to travel from Ipoh to Hat Yai as you can get a few hours sleep and arrive in Thailand's largest Southern city, ready for a day of sightseeing or shopping.

Travelling in the opposite direction is also an overnight journey, leaving in the late afternoon and arriving in Ipoh in the early hours of the morning.

This service has been cancelled from 19th May 2016.

From this date you will now have to take:

a fast ETS train from Ipoh to Padang Besar, then a Shuttle train or local bus to Hat Yai.

You can now also use the new ETS services from Ipoh to the border train station of Padang Besar.

You can then continue to Hat Yai by bus or minibus.

This service has been cancelled from 19th May 2016.

From this date you will now have to take:

a Shuttle train or local bus to Padang Besar, then a fast ETS train from Padang Besar to Ipoh.

This train stops in Padang Besar for border and passport control.

If you are travelling from Malaysia to Thailand, you can leave your luggage on the train, as there is currently no customs checks on baggage.

If you are travelling from Thailand into Malaysia, customs are much more stricter and you will have to take all your luggage off the train for inspection by customs.

Padang Besar railway station has a money changer (now closed) and upstairs there is a cafe where you can get some breakfast, or just a coffee, if you have time when travelling into Thailand, but will be closed in the evening if you are going into Malaysia.
