The new Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) ETS Butterworth to KL Sentral train service started operating in July 2015 and is now the fastest way to travel from Kuala Lumpur to Penang.

Update May 2016:
With a new KTMB timetable from this date, all the older Intercity Express trains to/from Butterworth have now been cancelled, with all long distance trains from Butterworth now operated by the new electric train services (ETS).
From the June 2018 (new KTM Berhad timetable) ETS services from Butterworth will only travel south to Kuala Lumpur's KL Sentral Railway Station and Gemas, with trains to Padang Besar Railway Station on the Malaysia - Thailand border to the north now being operated by KTM Komuter Trains.

From October 2015, a new Electric Train Service started from Butterworth to Gemas in the state of Negeri Sembilan.

This new high-speed train service will run on the new double electrified tracks and will travel at speeds of up to 140 kms an hour.
This has reduced the travel time between Kuala Lumpur and Butterworth Penang to around 4 hours.
